I relish every opportunity to talk about East High School. It is a great privilege to be able to serve this school as principal, considering the history and traditions that are the most well-known hallmarks of Green Bay East. Adding to that is the continuing academic, social, and interpersonal excellence, pride and sense of service that continue to be seen as the primary characteristics of this marvelous school.
East High School is the eighth school I’ve been a part of either as a teacher or administrator, and it is, hands-down, the most responsive, student-centered, hard-working and intelligent school organization I’ve ever seen. What sets East apart? What is so unique and special? Truly it’s hard to point to any single feature of the school and say, “This is it.” Different people find different things important, and any single traditional element of a school may or may not have great meaning to a student, to a parent, or to a family. To be sure, we are proud of our academic offerings, our attention to the individual interest and needs of students, our thoroughly professional and dedicated staff , our co-curricular offerings, and the many opportunities we are able to provide students from the broadest spectrum of abilities, aptitudes, and aspirations.
There is, however, a part of the human experience that has universal appeal and importance: knowing that you are valued and that you belong. Recently I interviewed 97% of the teachers who currently serve the students at East and began by asking them, “What is most important to you as an educator?” The most frequent answer I received was, “Relationships.” The teachers and staff at East put the highest premium on honest, solid and trusting relationships with students. We want every student at East to know that he or she matters and that we are here for their interest first, middle, and last.
